The Rules of MWC 2011

THE MOBILE World Congress in Barcelona has a few constants. It’s usually freezing, the city is gridlocked, none of the taxi drivers understand English, the tapas are always excellent (and remember tapas is NOT a starter; if you start eating tapas, you finish eating tapas), and the event itself is pretty much about mobiles only. This year MWC was spot on target- freezing, jammed, sin ingles(‘without English’) in every cab, tapas heaven every evening, but in the last part, MWC broke from convention. Mobility got redefined – it now meant everything that is deemed portable, i.e. all that you can carry with you is now Mobile.
The Big Ones from the all -new MWC.

LG OPTIMUS PAD: finally this 8.9- inch Android Honeycomb table is out. And a pretty little thing it is, with a Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor that runs the Android Honeycomb OS. The Big deal is that the optimus Pad sports dual cameras to allow for 3D still image and video shooting and a direct partnership with the all-new You Tube 3D.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S II: Despite some odd scepticism on sales numbers, the Galaxy S was by far the best Android phone on the Planet. It got pulled off shelves to make way for this one. Bigger screen (4.3′ super AMOLED screen compared with 4″ for the S). It’s slimmer (8.5mm vs.10mm for the original) and it has a IGHz dual-core processor compared withthe IGHz single core chip of the SI. Also thrown in is near Field Communication for cashless transactions. And it bumps up the ante in terms of OS,imaging, look andd finish.

SONY ERICSSON XPERIA PLAY:SE redeemed themselves. Photos of the ‘Play Station’ phone that appeared across the world as spy pictures had a very clunky design. The actual device is nothing like that. tThe Android-based Xperia Play has a slideout gaming keyboard with a digital D pad,  a second pad that has the exact layout of a PlayStation controller with two analogue touch pads and two shoulder buttons. Power is provided by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor and the device has a very eye-pleasing four-inch screen. about 50 game titles are expected to launch.

HTC FACEBOOK PHONES : They are’nt officially Facebook phones. But they could have been – a dedicated facebook button in their most distinctive features. The real name of the Phones are a little cringeworthy. Are you ready? Here goes — the ChaCha and Salsa. The deicated FB button on the phones lets you access your account instantly and is context aware of what you’re doing. Status updates and profile information are also tightly integrated. While the ChaCha has a 2.6-inch display and  a full QWERTY keyboard, the Salsa is a full touch Screen Phone with a 3.4 inch screen. Both phones run android 2.3 and should be price quite low.

HTC FLYER : Almost everybody knew that HTC would join the tablet race. Thus they unreviled the Flyer, a 7 inch tablet running Android 2.4. The Body and look istypical HTC. Unibody aluminium Chassis, weighs slightly less than a pound and about 0.51 inches thick. Innards run on  a 1.5GHz qualcomm Snapdragon processor with IGB RAm. Add to that a front facing camera for video calls, a back facing 5 megapixel camera as well as HSPA+. It alos has a nifty little app called Scribe that lets you take notes and draw pictures directly onto the Screenjust you would with a piece of paper.

SAMSUNG 10.1 AND 5: While Samsung’s disguised the 5-Incher by calling it the Galaxy Wi-Fi 5.0 and terming it a poratble media player and gaming device, this is a Tablet if ever I saw one. Android 2.2, IGHz Humminfbird processor, 800-by-480-resolution screen -5 megapixel camera- this should be the cheapest Tablet in their stable. Then there was the Biggie- the Android 3.0 Honeycomb, 10.1-inch,1280-by-800-resolution display, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, an 8 megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera. At 1.32 pounds,it’s lighter than Motorola Xoom and Apple’s iPad and that is no mean feat considring it’s a 10.1 inch device. This is a bag beautiful and brilliant device. All Samsung needs to do is  to finally gets its Tablet pricing Right.
More to go from other companies and other devices. Now, it’s time for the final rule of MWC. When you start on Tapas, you end on Tapas- but you only end when ypu’re full to the point of throwing up. I intend to do just that and I can’t do that while typing.
